What is a White Water Park?

The proposed White Water Park will comprise two concrete lined channels each about 350 metres long and 12 - 15 metres wide. Water would be pumped from a holding lake at the bottom to the top of the channels. It will flow down to the bottom lake creating channels of exciting whitewater for canoeing, rafting and body boarding.

The White Water Park does not require potable water. The water in the channels will be recycled so it will use relatively small amounts of water. Top up for the channels and bottom lake will require less than 3% of the water required for an 18 hole golf course.

The White Water Park proposal has been the subject of very thorough market research followed by a detailed feasibility study. The proposed Whitewater Park would:

  • be used by several hundred thousand people per annum for canoeing, rafting, body boarding and spectating;
  • attract many thousands of tourists;
  • be used by a large number of high schools;
  • have significant use by youth community groups;
  • be a venue for major international canoe slalom events;
  • be used by international canoe slalom teams coming to Perth to train;
  • employ over 100 people both full and part time;
  • be the site of the Community Paddle Centre which aims to improve youth health and fitness, provide vocational training, find employment and provide meaningful sport and recreation for local youth. Its charter would address important community issues of:
    • Community health;
    • Training and preparation for employment;
    • Employment with a focus on youth;
  • be the site of the Australian Moving Water Safety Centre - the only one in Australia. It is proposed that this be developed in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia;
  • possibly be the site of a proposed Perth Water Conservation Education Centre.

Australia's only other White Water Park, Penrith, was built in Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games.
